Will Danny Jacobs Beat Gennady Golovkin?

Danny Jacobs may be Gennady Golovkin's toughest test so far, but in order to win he has to fight the perfect fight. Below we examine some key things Jacobs must do in order to beat Golovkin.

Danny Jacob's keys to victory:

  • Gain Golovkin's respect early
Golovkin will walk through any fighter if he doesn't respect their power. This was the problem that Kell Brook had when he fought Golovkin.  Brook is a masterful fighter, and Golovkin has never been hit with shots as cleanly as Brook's; Brook just didn't have the power to stop Golovkin from cutting the ring off and ending the fight.

Hopefully since Danny Jacobs is a full middleweight instead of a welterweight, his power will garner more respect from GGG.
  • Get off first, especially with the jab
Danny Jacobs has a 3 inch reach advantage over Golovkin, so he needs to use his jab to keep Golovkin at distance.  Golovkin may be the best in the world at cutting the ring off, so Jacob's cannot afford to give up too much space to Golovkin.  A hard and consistent jab is exactly what Jacobs needs in order to stop, or at least slow down, Golovkin's stalking style.

Don't let Golovkin's knockout percentage fool you (92% KO rate), Golovkin throws and lands more jabs than any other middleweight in this history of the division.  Golovkin's boxing ability isn't underrated, it just isn't as noticeable as his power is.  Jacob's cant let Golovkin feel comfortable in the ring, he needs to keep jabbing and controlling the distance and the ring.
  • Take advantage of GGG's lack of head movement
Paulie Malignaggi points out that Golovkin's major flaw is his lack of head movement.  It has not yet been a problem for Golovkin since he has an amazing chin. However, Kell Brook was able to snap Golovkin's head back many times on the inside thanks to his uppercut.  Unfortunately, Brook didn't possess the power to stop the GGG onslaught; but we definitely saw that Golovkin did not like how much he was getting hit.

Jacobs needs to throw the uppercut and stay busy to cause as much damage to Golovkin as possible.
  • Needs to be in the best shape of his life
Outside of a punchers chance, I don't believe you beat Golovkin even if Golovkin is having a bad night, his style and power force any opponent to rise up and beat him, something that hasn't happened in Golovkin's career.  Hopefully Jacobs has had the best training camp of his life; he'll definitely need it.

Prediction: I would be shocked if this fight didn't end in a knockout.  Jacobs and Golovkin both possess the power and skill to floor their opponent, but I do believe that Jacobs needs to fight perfectly in order to win.

Jacobs has also been knocked out, and although this was years ago before he had cancer, he still has been dropped in his career.  Additionally, Sergio Mora who has water guns for arms was able to knock down Jacobs.

They call Jacobs the Miracle Man, but I just don't see him pulling out a miracle against Gennady Golovkin.

Golovkin by KO.
