NBA Finals 2016: Things to Watch For

Free Throw Shooting
- LeBron's 5.8 FTA/game in this year's playoffs is drastically lower than his career average of 9.2 and even last year's run of 8.4.
- Even Irving getting to the line a tick below 4 times a game is noticeably reduced than his regular season career average 4.5 (used this because it served as a larger sample size).
- The Warriors are largely inconsistent when it comes to this department as they do fall in love with shooting 3s

  • In the last series however, the Thunder decided to press Curry as often as possible and in turn he was more aggressive than he usually is. This led to an astounding 6.3 FTA/game for him. It'll be interesting to see if we see these numbers continue or normalize to the precedent.

Three Point Shooting
- Both teams had mixed results in the previous round, with especially low numbers when shooting on the road in Games 3 and 4.
- Three point shooting teams usually get cold the round directly after they peak.

  • This trend just affected the Cavaliers. After making 77 threes in just four games against Atlanta, Cleveland's outside shot faltered when they went to Toronto.

- On the other side of things, Klay Thompson has been hot for most of the playoffs whereas Steph was quiet for most of the previous series.

Draymond Green and Tristan Thompson
- Both received large extensions last season and used each other as leverage in negotiations to receive very similar deals

  • Draymond Green: 5 year/$85 million
  • Tristan Thompson: 5 year/$82 million

- The two couldn't be any more different in their playing styles either, aside for their affinity to defense.

  • Green is a playmaker that can spread the floor with three point shots. He often assumes the role of a point-forward because of his unique skill set.
  • Thompson, however, is a relentless rebounder that is most known for crashing boards on the offensive side at an astounding rate. It should also be noted that his post moves have been developing throughout his career.

Bench Production
- Warriors have had solid bench production through their title runs for the previous two seasons
  • Some of the most productive lineups against OKC involved Speights and Livingston
  • Livingston used his size advantage over Dellavedova during recent meetings to score quite easily.
- Last year, Shumpert & Dellavedova both started in the playoffs and played phenomenal defense on the Splash Brothers until their injuries ultimately got the better of them.
  • Dellavedova is having ankle issues so we'll see if it carries over to this series.
The 7 footers
- Will Mozgov see playing time? He's been having troubles catching passes and staying active this season, so his size advantage may not even be used.
  • Last year he looked like a completely different player and was even the second highest scorer for Cleveland in last year's Finals.
- Can Andrew Bogut stay out of foul trouble? In Games 3 and 4 of the Western Conference Finals, he committed a lot of fouls (most of them were silly) and OKC's bigs had a field day and grabbed tons of rebounds because of that.
  • Ezeli is still an active and physical rim protector that can give Cleveland fits.
