Danny Garcia vs. Paulie Malignaggi: Preview and Prediction

Preview:

This fight is between two highly underrated boxers in the welterweight (147 pounds) division. Danny Garcia is an undefeated fighter who stands at 30 - 0 while Paulie Malignaggi is a two time champion who stands at 33 - 6. Danny Garcia is moving up to welterweight from being a junior welterweight in this bout.  This fight makes sense for Garcia because Malignaggi has never been a hard hitting fighter (Malignaggi has won 33 fights with only 7 knockouts), so this is a good fight for Garcia to test his speed and power as he moves up in weight.  This is also a good fight for Malignaggi, because Garcia has shown that he has trouble against fighters who move around the ring and stay on the outside, something Malignaggi has made his career doing.

What to Look for:

Paulie Malignaggi – Malignaggi will have to win this fight by decision.  Malignaggi will be fighting from the outside tonight.  Look for him to utilize his 1.5 inch reach advantage by moving around the ring and jabbing away all night.  He should also be wary of Garcia’s mean left hook, so he will probably be moving away from Garcia's left hand throughout the night.  If Malignaggi can control the distance and keep from trading blows with Garcia, he will have a chance of upsetting Garcia by winning a decision.

Danny Garcia – Garcia is the heavy favorite to win this fight.  Garcia will likely be too quick and too strong an opponent for Malignaggi to handle.  If Garcia can stay busy and pressure Malignaggi the way Shawn Porter did, Garcia will easily walk away with the win, possibly by knockout. Although Malignaggi may be able to out hustle and out-think Garcia in certain spots, I highly doubt he will be able to put Garcia in a bad situation at any point in the fight.

My Prediction: Garcia by knockout in 8

Danny Garcia is the heavy favorite to win this fight, and that’s who I am going with as well.  I just think Danny has too much power and speed for Malignaggi to handle.  Malignaggi’s defense was easy to crack for Shawn Porter, and I think Garcia will likely perform in a similar manner. Part of me still thinks that Paulie may be able to out box Danny and win a decision, but I’m hesitant to go all in with that unlikely possibility.
