But as things stand right now, that is the reality! And I will be the first person to raise my hands up and say that I did not see this coming. Liverpool went on to demolish a hapless Spurs and took advantage of Arsenal's defeat against Manchester City to gain ground and close the gap to 2 points at the top. And while there are many reasons for Liverpool's success so far this season which includes Brendan Rodger's smart signings, the lethal striker in Daniel Sturridge, the midfield duo of Jordan Henderson and Phillipe Coutinho and an excellent goalkeeper in Simon Migolet, there is one man that deserves a huge amount of credit above the rest of the squad. That man is none other than Luis Suarez.
Is there anything that Suarez cannot do? The guy can score goals from long range, chip shots, free kicks and headers. He can find gaps in the field to find space for Sturridge or Sterling and help them create chances from tight angles. He can get a quick burst in his pace as soon as he sees an opportunity which makes him a nightmare for defenders. Suarez can also show you how to become a goalkeeper in desperate times, how to make patrice evra mad, how to snub a handshake, and how to bite fellow human beings time and time again. When Liverpool signed Suarez to the team, people were not quite sure what to expect from the man from AFC Ajax and Uruguay. But what he showed the Premier league world is something to savor. After showing signs of unwillingness to stay with Liverpool during the offseason, Arsenal bid 40 million pounds for Liverpool to sign him. When Liverpool rejected the bid, Arsenal gave another offer of 40 million + 1 pound since they believed that would trigger a club release in Suarez's contract. Thank god Arsenal went on to make John W Henry, the Liverpool owner mad enough to make him tweet that suarez was not for sale. And what happens when the season starts? Suarez proves to be instrumental to Liverpools success so far.
After missing the first 6 games of the Premier league due to still serving suspension from biting Ivanovic last season (did I mention Suarez likes to bite people?), Suarez went on to tally a total of 17 goals BEFORE Christmas. To put that in perspective, Suarez has scored more goals than 10 teams in the Premier League have all season. And this is AFTER missing the first 6 games of the season. The second highest goalscorer in the league is Sergio Aguero with 13. And the goals that he scored are not cheap either. Every goal that Suarez scores has something to admire, whether it comes to his ability to find a space in the net, or to dribble by defenders, or to make a chip shot that is just enough to get past the goalkeeper or simply to see the power of his right foot when he takes a shot at goal. Suarez has firmly established himself as one of the best players that the Premier League has to offer this season and has most certainly become the best player that Liverpool have and the player to build around for the future. Whether Suarez will make a commitment to stay will Liverpool's project is another question, but if the results keep on coming like this and Liverpool go on to qualify for the Champions League next year, Suarez might decide to become Liverpool's centerpiece after all.
